Provide Stability for CA Charter Schools – Continue Pandemic Protections and Extend Charter Petitions Now
After nearly three years of the pandemic, California’s public-school students need (1) stability in their education, (2) deserve full focus and attention on recovery, and their post-pandemic educational and emotional needs, and (3) to get students back on track with multiple levels of supports.
Charter public schools must be renewed periodically, but received a two-year extension due to the impact the pandemic had on our schools, students and the suspension of state testing. However, the pandemic and its impacts continue to affect schools. As a result, the necessary data for charter renewal decisions is inadequate due to data gaps and testing suspensions caused by the pandemic. Reinstating charter renewals at this time would create incredible uncertainty for charter schools and be an unnecessary distraction from the critical task at hand – serving our students.
SB 739 is on the Senate Floor now and must be acted on before June 2nd.
