Urgent: Protect Our Children – Oppose the Freedom to Read Act (S2421)
Dear New Jersey AMAC members,
Our children's education and well-being are at risk, and we need your help. The New Jersey Senate Education Committee will soon be voting on S.2421, the Freedom to Read Act, sponsored by Senators Zwicker and Ruiz. This bill, which will be heard on Thursday, June 20, puts parental rights on the sidelines and allows inappropriate graphic books in our children's school libraries.
We must act now to protect our children's education and development. Here’s why we need to urge the Senate Education Committee to vote NO on S.2421:
1. Preserve Parental Rights: This bill undermines the critical role that parents play in overseeing their children's education. Parents should have the right to guide what their children read and be involved in decisions about library materials.
2. Protect Children from Inappropriate Content: S.2421 would allow access to books that contain graphic and unsuitable content for young readers. We need to ensure that our school libraries offer materials that are age-appropriate and conducive to healthy development.
3. Maintain High Educational Standards: Our schools must provide a safe and nurturing environment. Allowing potentially harmful content undermines these standards and can negatively impact our children's mental and emotional health.
Take Action Now:
We urge you to contact the members of the Senate Education Committee and express your opposition to S.2421.
