Globally, 780 million people do not have access to a clean water source. An estimated 2.5 billion people lack access to improved sanitation facilities – that's more than 35% of the world’s population. Tragically, almost 800 children die each day due to diarrhea caused by unsafe water, sanitation and hygiene. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), improving hygiene in healthcare facilities could save the lives of 1,000 newborns every day.
The new bipartisan International Water and Sanitation Caucus brings together U.S. Representatives who recognize that water and sanitation are key to global health, nutrition, gender equality, economic empowerment, ecosystem protection, U.S. trade, and our own national security. The Caucus will provide expertise and support Congressional activities to ensure the U.S. plays its part in the global effort to achieve safe drinking water and sanitation, and to address the security impacts of water scarcity and management.
