So NO to Double Standards in the Unfair HB 20

While most of you were sleeping last night HB 20 Healthy Workplace Act passed the NM Senate. The bill requires ALL private sector businesses in New Mexico to pay for a minimum of 64 hours paid time off that can be used under a broad category of ‘sick leave.’  That’s right, ANY business that has even one employee will be impacted by this new mandate. But the paid time off does not apply to state workers!

The mandate proposed in a HB 20 Healthy Workplaces Act, would apply to ALL private sector businesses, with even one employee, and requires 64 hours of paid sick leave.  This is in addition to current pandemic orders requiring 80 hours of paid time off and is in addition to anything the employer is already doing for the employee.

Senators from both parties objected to the hypocrisy of this double standard, rightfully pointing out if the premise behind the new mandate was valid for private sector workers then ‘the government’ should be required to provide the same right for state workers.  Ultimately, the bill passed at 2:27 am this morning with all Republicans and Senator Munoz voting ‘no.’ The bill must now go back to the House for concurrence.

NMBC asks that you join us and tell House members “NO” to the double standard passed by the Senate.  It’s not right for government to pass mandates that they then exempt themselves from following.

Send a note TODAY urging State Representatives who will be voting on HB 20 to vote NO on HB 20.
