SAVE THE ITHACA POLICE DEPARTMENT & SUPPORT THE ITHACA PBA

Residents, Business Owners and all Community Members of Ithaca,

Your Ithaca Police Officers are dialing 9-1-1!!!

Recently, Mayor Myrick co-authored a Tompkins County Reimagining Public Safety Collaboration report titled "Reimagining Public Safety Report."

This report calls for "19 Recommendations" that among many include the following:

1- Eliminating current Ithaca Police Officers and replacing them with a combination of armed Public Safety Officers and unarmed Community Solutions Workers.

2- Changing the 9-1-1 reporting system.

3- Reducing the readiness and ability of the Officers and Department to respond to critical incidents through the repurposing of the Department's Mobile Command Vehicle to another agency in Tompkins County.

If this happens, the Ithaca Police Department’s ability to protect and serve the community will be drastically impacted!!!

How can Mayor Myrick believe ELIMINATING AND REPLACING the Ithaca Police Department is the right move?

While the Ithaca PBA welcomes many of the changes outlined in the report and acknowledges the need for police reform, we cannot sit back and watch Mayor Myrick single-handedly place his own political agenda above the "public safety" of Ithaca.

Mayor Myrick's has also made it clear that his goal has been to slowly and methodically "Defund the Ithaca Police Department" while never fully expressing that to the Ithaca community.

Please don't take it from us...hear it from Mayor Myrick yourself.

Here are two quotes from Mayor Myrick's March 9th, 2021 Facebook Live interview with Black Lives Matter Los Angeles, where he stated:

"…I don't use the term (Defund the Police)…mostly, just because it slows us down here…locally…" - Svante Myrick

"…Now in Ithaca, since I took office in 2012, the police department has actually shrank something like 20%..." - Svante Myrick

Here's another example from June 7th, 2020:

“And I don’t know how many of you know, 8 years ago, my first year in office, we DEFUNDED the Ithaca Police Department by 15%.”

Don’t be fooled by Mayor Myrick’s words though.  He knows that the Ithaca Police Department is one of the most well trained, professional, progressive and community-oriented police departments in the entire nation and has said so himself recently.

“…We are proud of the good work of the Ithaca Police Department and strive to make our City a great place…” - Svante Myrick

“…The men and women of the Ithaca Police Department have performed their duties with admirable skill and professionalism…” - Svante Myrick

“…As head of a police department I see every day the important work that police do. They do a dangerous job under difficult circumstances. They respond to the most mundane calls and the most horrific ones. They protect us from drunk drivers, domestic abuse, burglary and more. Most of them do it with professionalism and respect. They are committed and compassionate public servants…”- Svante Myrick

So why would Mayor Myrick propose ELIMINATING AND REPLACING a police department that he thinks so highly of?

The Common Council is being asked to adopt / vote on this proposal by March 31st.

Please click on the link above to email the Ithaca Common Council and urge them to reject Mayor Myrick's current resolution that was presented to them on March 10th, 2021 and to consider alternatives that do not include replacing the Ithaca Police Department!!!
