Speak Up: Tell Minnesota Leaders to Support Clean Cars!

In September of 2019, Governor Walz announced “Clean Cars Minnesota” – the adoption of clean car standards to reduce pollution from motor vehicles. This was no accident – in addition to numerous other negative health and equity impacts of emissions, transportation is the single largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in Minnesota.

The Clean Air Act gives states the opportunity to choose between Federal standards–frequently changed to suit the politics of the moment – and an optional set of state standards, which have historically been both more protective and more consistent over time. Clean Cars Minnesota would transition Minnesota to the stronger state standards for reducing emissions from cars and trucks.

Not surprisingly, the petroleum industry and other interest groups are pushing back hard and the Legislature is now considering a proposal that attempts to strip the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency of its responsibility to protect Minnesotans from transportation pollution. This move would undermine the good faith participation of the thousands of Minnesotans who have contributed to the Clean Cars Minnesota rulemaking process over the past year.

We need all Minnesotans to once again take action for Clean Cars Minnesota and oppose this unwarranted legislative intervention into the MPCA’s role in our state. Send a note to your legislator urging them to oppose Senate File 450. Even if you know your legislator already supports clean car standards, they still need to hear from you!
