Say NO to Texas Bill HB 678

A new bill would allow pharmacists to administer any vaccine on the childhood recommended schedule to children three years or older.

The current law only allows pharmacists to administer vaccines to children 7 years or older, and also requires prescriptions before pharmacists can administer certain vaccines at different ages. H.B. 678 removes the requirement for a prescription and drops the allowable age.

This bill creates significant risks for children. Pharmacists are not qualified to recognize or handle serious adverse reactions, nor are they likely to have full knowledge of patient or family history.

Additionally, there is nothing in this bill that requires the pharmacist to get consent from the parent. What happens if a relative brings the child in for a vaccine against the parent’s wishes?

The bill was heard in the Public Health Committee and left pending. Now is the time to let your Texas state legislators know you OPPOSE H.B 678 and its companion bill S.B. 2136.
