Allow Independent Contractors to Thrive in California

The Current ABC test states that many professionals who were traditionally independent contractors must now be considered employees. This test goes too far and restricts an individual’s freedom to choose to ‘work for themselves’ as independent contractors. Having independent contractors gives freedom to building your own schedule and having a supplemental income. More so, during the pandemic, it would’ve allowed people to contract if they had lost their job and businesses were uncertain and halted hiring employees.

Last year, the Legislature sensibly realized that these new rules don’t work for specific industries, thereby providing certain exemptions. However, current law leaves many smaller businesses and non-profits out in the cold. We must revist the legal definition of an independent contractor and allow for them to thrive in California.
