Free Speech Is Sacrificed In California Bill Aiming to Prevent Firearm Marketing For Minors

California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) has been adamant about his desire to pass several pieces of gun control legislation this legislative session. Among those legislative priorities is Assembly Bill 2571.  Supposedly, this bill's aim is to restrict the marketing and advertising of firearms to minors. However, with the ambiguous language of the bill, it is still up in the air what may actually end up being restricted.  Under current law, commercial speech or advertising is generally protected under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.  There are a few exceptions to this including the marketing practices of cigarette, marijuana, and alcohol companies to minors.  Is the promotiion of a natural right the equivalent to these exceptions?  Clearly, this is an attempt to silence free speech and further erode pro-rights messaging in the Golden State.

To protect free speech, utilize FPC's constituent outreach tool on this page to contact your specific assemblymember directly.  FPC has drafted a sample email that you are encouraged to review, edit, and personalize prior to sending it off to your lawmaker's inbox.  These efforts sometimes feel like an uphill climb in California, but there has been some recent success against similar overreaching bills.  Due to this, FPC is hoping for maximal participation from our members and supporters. Thank you in advance for joining fellow liberty advocates in this effort to preserve free speech in California.
