Phone use results in manual, visual, and cognitive distractions – a motorist using their phone may have hands off the wheel, eyes off the road, and mind off the task. If you are using a phone, you may be sitting behind the wheel, but you are not driving.
30 states including Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Georgia, and Tennessee have a hand-held ban in place, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association. But Michigan does not – yet.
NHTSA estimates that 8% of fatal crashes in 2020 involved distracted drivers. More than 29,000 people have died in crashes involving distracted drivers from 2012 to 2020. We have to do better.
We're so close to getting stronger distracted driving laws passed through the Michigan Senate! The bipartisan hands-free bill package, HB 4277-4279, is sponsored by Reps. Manoogian, Mueller, and Bellino. It passed the Michigan House and is scheduled for a hearing on June 16 in the Senate Judiciary Committee. We need senators to commit their support, and your voice can make a difference.
