Legislators in Sacramento are up to their dirty tricks again and this time it is Asm. Marc Levine (D-10). Assembly Bill 1227 started out as legislation relating to solar panels. One "gut-and-amend" later and AB 1227 now aims to apply an additional excise tax on firearms, "precursor parts", and ammo.
AB 1227 would add a 10% tax on handguns and an 11% tax on long guns. These would effectively double the tax burden on firearms purchasers that already exists from the federal firearms excise tax. As if it wasn't enough with skyrocketing prices, this bill is flagged as an "urgency statute" and would go into effect right away with the tax kicking in on July 1, 2023.
