Calling Gov. Carney’s Office

Before you call Gov. Carney’s office, read through our pointers and decide what you plan to say. If you call during normal business hours, your call will likely be answered by a staffer. If you reach voicemail, leave a message.

Suggested call script:

Hello. My name is ____________ and I live in___________, Delaware. I am calling to ask Governor Carney to sign the cannabis legalization bills into law if they make it to his desk.

Talking points (choose one):

  • I was glad to see Gov. Carney speak out about the traumatic and racist search of the Delaware State University women’s lacrosse team. But if the governor vetoes HB 371, he will be giving police the greenlight to continue performing the same intrusive, humiliating searches right here in Delaware.
  • Legalization dramatically reduces the number of traffic searches by removing the most common pretext. If Gov. Carney cares about stopping racist pretextual searches, he needs to sign HB 371 into law.
  • There are now 18 states — including neighboring New Jersey — that have ended cannabis prohibition. More than 70% of Delaware voters want to see our state follow suit.
  • Delaware should stop wasting resources on punishing individuals for activities that are legal in 18 other states. By legalizing cannabis, we can free up law enforcement resources to focus on serious crimes.

Could you pass my message along? Thank you and have a great day!

Once you’re ready, please call Gov. Carney's office at (302) 744-4101.

Tips:

1. Be respectful.

2. Be succinct. Please be respectful of staffers’ time by getting right to the point. Check out our sample script and talking points for ideas.

3. Be clear. Make sure they know why you’re calling and what you want them to do — to ask Gov. Carney to sign the legalization bills into law.
