Soaring inflation and rising energy prices are taking a heavy toll on New Mexico families. But right now, legislators in Santa Fe are considering legislation that could raise energy prices even more while potentially reducing reliability.
Under 2023 Senate Bill 165, customers would buy their electricity from a “middle-man” instead of directly from their electric utility. The new middle-man entity would not own any generation of their own, so they would just buy electricity from a utility or other generation provider, and sell it to their consumers. If no electricity generation was available for purchase, the middleman would have none to sell to their consumers.
If this scheme is approved by the legislature, you would have to choose to opt-out if one is formed in your community. The new entity would sell you something you are already buying, but charge you an extra fee to pay themselves. Tell lawmakers to vote against SB165 by filling out the form provided!
