We Have the Opportunity to Rein in the Governor’s Emergency Powers

For nearly three years, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has had New Mexico under a state of emergency that gives her special powers over our schools, businesses, and way of life. She has given no indication of when, or if, she will relinquish those special emergency powers.

But a new bill in this year’s legislature, HB80 Termination of States of Emergency, would revise New Mexico’s emergency power laws to bring accountability and take the power away from just one person.

The bill would require that any governor must consult with the legislature after an emergency order was issued depending on the length of time and severity of restrictions. The legislature would have the power to terminate the state of emergency if they saw fit.

We need everyone who wants to see the balance of powers restored in our state to take action today and tell New Mexico lawmakers to SUPPORT HB80; Termination of States of Emergency.
