HB 218 Requiring socialized utility rates - just another tax on hard-working New Mexicans!

NM Legislators are considering HB 218 Low-Income Public Utility Rates which would require utility providers to have lower gas or electric rates for low-income residential customers. These ‘lower rates’ would be subsidized by all other New Mexico ratepayers, most heavily impacting lower middle-class working families who are not eligible for government assistance.

Poverty and the needs of others are important, but when the government forces increased rates on some to cover the costs for others, additional hardships are created.

Consider the elderly or those on fixed incomes who can barely afford their own utility bills. HB 218 would force them to help cover utility costs for others when they struggle to pay their own bill. What about water bills, cell phone bills, internet bills, and even property tax bills – are socialized rates next for bills we all pay?

Don’t let progressive politicians socialize New Mexico! Use the form provided and tell them to vote ‘NO’ on HB 218 Low-Income Public Utility Rates.
