We have the right to a clean environment! So let's uphold existing laws and regulations instead of a conflicted constitutional amendment.

There are existing laws and regulations in New Mexico that give citizens a right to a clean environment.

In SJR 6: Environmental Rights Constitutional Amendment, a clean environment, self-sustaining ecosystem, and stable climate are not defined. Rather than the legislature deciding how it will protect the environment, it allows citizens who feel their environmental rights are being violated to file a variety of lawsuits against the state, counties, municipalities, farming, mining, and oil and gas companies.

Unlike regular bills, if the resolution successfully makes it through the legislature, it will not have to be sent to the governor for approval. Instead, as a proposed amendment to the state constitution, it will be put on the ballot in the upcoming general election.

Say no to this poorly conceived legislation that models New York and California. For a state like New Mexico - dependent on industries like oil, gas, and agriculture - this could devastate our economy and create a landscape ripe with lawsuits over “undefined” individual environmental rights. Complete the form provided to tell lawmakers to VOTE NO on SJR 6!
