Empower Domestic Violence Survivors to Make Their Own Choices

Current California law requires healthcare providers to report to law enforcement cases of suspected violent physical injuries, even when the patient does not want to make a report. This mandated reporting law can negatively impacts survivors of domestic and sexual violence by creating barriers to healthcare access, decreasing safety through non-consensual systems, and eroding trust between healthcare providers and patients.

Utilizing a survivor-centered and trauma-informed approach that connects survivors to community-based advocates would increase healthcare access, pathways to safety, and agency for survivors of domestic and sexual violence.

Some staggering facts:
- Over 80% of survivors say that mandatory reporting to law enforcement did not improve their safety or made their situation worse.
-  In the United States, 1 in 3 LGBTQ people have experienced domestic violence at some point in their lives.
- 46% of transgender survivors of violence said they were uncomfortable seeking help from police.
