Step therapy restricts access to lifesaving medications!

The Safe Step Act (H.R. 2630/S. 652) would:

  • Require Insurers to implement a clear and transparent process for a patient or physician to request an exemption for a step therapy protocol
  • Mandate insurers respond to a step therapy exemption request within 72 hours and 24 hours if the patient’s life is at risk
  • Outline 5 exceptions to step therapy protocols:
  1. Patient has already tried and failed on the required drug
  2. Delayed treatment will cause irreversible consequences for the patient
  3. Required drug will cause an adverse reaction to patient
  4. Required drug will prevent the patient from fulfilling activities required for daily life, including working
  5. Patient is stable on current medication selected by their provider
