Support the Freedom to Read

Share a short personal video message about why the right to read is important, share your name (first name only is fine!) and where you are from, then ask your legislator to support the Freedom to Read legislation!

Your video should be personal and heartfelt – it should come from you as an individual and professional, but not as an employee of your library. If you need inspiration, try answering any question or prompt below.

Remember to start your message by stating your name and where you are from (your city). At the end of your message don’t forget to ask your legislator to support the Freedom to Read legislation!

Questions/prompts:

  • Describe a specific moment when access to a book made an impact on you or a library patron.
  • Describe how your library chooses books for the collection and why librarians are qualified to make these choices.
  • Why should books that represent all identities be available in the library?

Video notes:

  • Feel free to record your video in the library, but remember you are advocating as an individual and library professional – not as an employee of your library.
  • Before you submit, make sure your video is clear and well-lit and audio quality is good.

MLA will be sharing these videos with legislators on social media and using them in our communications to advocate for the right to read during Michigan Library Advocacy Day on Tuesday, April 16. Advocates from all over Michigan will meet in person with legislators, and we want to continue amplifying our message and ask for our legislators' support with these videos. We will tag your legislators on social media so they see your message.
