Universal Basic Income is dangerous and unsustainable for our state
In SB 164 Universal Basic Income (UBI) for "Pregnant People," the Legislature is pushing to spend $80 Million on a pilot project to give “pregnant people” $1,500 monthly throughout pregnancy and for the first year of the infant’s life. This amounts to over $30,000 of taxpayer money being given per pregnant woman, with no strings attached.
UBI will create a state of dependency that will encourage women to get pregnant again by the time their infants reach 1 year old to keep the money flowing in. This does not teach women or families how to be responsible, productive members of our society. Additionally, there are already many Federal aid programs for low-income mothers and families.
It is also unsustainable in the long run for our state to continue paying $30,000+ per pregnant woman. If even half of the low-income women in the state used this program for just one pregnancy, the cost would be over 3 BILLION dollars.
