Tell your Senator and Representative to address the #1 concern currently, the Open Borders and Catch and Release of criminals.

Gov. Lujan Grisham announced a special session on crime that will start on Thursday, July 18 to allow “lawmakers to finish what they started during the 30-day session”. It is estimated that each day of a special session costs the New Mexico taxpayers over $50,000.

The issue of crime in New Mexico is widely acknowledged. Forbes Advisor's 2024 ranking positioned New Mexico as the most dangerous state due to both violent and property crimes. The criminal justice reforms implemented in 2016, which led to an increase in the number of accused defendants released pending trial, are cited as contributing factors to the surge in crime. Additionally, the prevalence of addiction, which was compounded by the approval of recreational cannabis, mental illness, and poverty exacerbates the situation.

In an interview with NM PBS on 4/5/24, the governor mentioned her collaboration with legislative leadership, committee chairs, and experts to draft legislation addressing crime. She announced plans to reintroduce three bills from the 2024 30-day session that failed to advance out of committee, along with proposing a new bill modeled after legislation in California to facilitate "civil commitment."

Concerns persist regarding border security and the release of violent offenders back into the community, neither of which were addressed in the Governor's statements. This omission raises questions about the allocation of taxpayer funds towards initiatives that may not adequately tackle significant issues.

We urge you to convey a message to both the Governor and the Legislature, requesting they prioritize addressing border security and the practice of catch and release if they are genuinely committed to combating crime.
