Restore & Preserve: Ban Inshore Shrimp Trawling

You’ve heard our message before – now it’s time to take action. Inshore shrimp trawling remains one of the many challenges facing North Carolina and our beloved North Carolina sounds need your support.

North Carolina is the only state that still allows this harmful practice, and each year inshore shrimp trawlers’ chains and nets devastate our fragile ecosystem. Inshore shrimp trawling threatens our sounds with bycatch – the unintended capture and killing of juvenile fish. 80% of bycatch can include marine life such as southern flounder, grey trout, spot, croaker, and blue crab.

Banning inshore shrimp trawling will not impact the shrimp on your plate and this extremely destructive method of fishing is devastating our native wildlife, ecosystems and our North Carolina economy. It’s time to end it.

With a new legislative session fast approaching, this is our chance to demand change and protect North Carolina’s marine life before it’s too late.

Contact your representative today and urge them to prioritize this issue next session and stand with other shrimping states to finally put an end to this harmful practice.
