Stop the Federal Attack on Trans Athletes!
Attacks on the civil rights of transgender people are not limited to executive orders or the legislative halls of red states. anti-trans extremists are taking their attacks on trans people even further. Last month, Assemblymember Kate Sanchez introduced a trans sports ban in California. The so-called "Protect Girls’ Sports Act" would ban transgender girls from participating in high school sports.
School sports play a significant role in many young people's learning and development, helping them to develop critical life skills such as communication, teamwork, and leadership. Participation in sports is also linked to better academic outcomes, improved confidence and self-esteem, and lower levels of stress and anxiety. Transgender girls, like all students, deserve the same opportunity to learn these valuable skills and build a sense of belonging with their peers.
These bans do nothing to protect women and girls, and it goes without saying that the authors of these bills are the same folks leading the attacks on women's bodily autonomy and healthcare. This isn't about concern for women and girls, this is about oppression of trans people.
