We must act to stop book bans in Rutherford County Schools!

During the last board meeting on January 23, the Rutherford County Schools Board of Education voted to remove seven more books from school library shelves and placed restrictions on two other titles. They did so despite time-consuming review by professionally trained library staff, who recommended that the books be retained. The impacted titles were on a list of more than 150 titles challenged in November 2024 due to sexual content. The titles on the list were removed from shelves pending review by library staff.
The censorship attacks in the district have been going on for a few years now, with dozens of titles permanently removed or restricted, including award-winning and acclaimed works by Toni Morrison, Judy Blume, Khaled Hosseini, and more.
Our dedicated library staff already have an overwhelming workload to meet the needs of students and educators in the district. The burden of reviewing more than 100 titles has been very hard on library staff, even more so when their expert advice is ignored and overridden by the school board.
We need to stand up for our library staff and defend our rights as parents and the rights of our students. Don’t let the censors win in Rutherford County!
