New HUD Rule Gives a Free Pass to Discrimination Against Homeless Trans Folks
In 2016, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) published a rule granting equal access to homeless shelters and other facilities that receive federal funds, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. This was a lifeline for transgender folks without homes. Then the Trump Administration rescinded that rule for gender identity in 2020, and again this past week.
This means that a transgender person can now be denied entry to a shelter corresponding with their gender, putting their well-being and safety at risk.
This action by HUD is incredibly cruel - 8% of transgender adults report having recently experienced homelessness, compared to 1% of cisgender straight adults. Trans young people are also more likely to become homeless because of family rejection, which can often extend into adulthood as a result of employment discrimination. With an administration that looks eager to roll back anti-discrimination protections in all aspects of life for trans people, it is more crucial than ever that we fight back on the attacks on the most vulnerable.
