SUPPORT SB 1186 - NO MORE SECRET SURVEILLANCE IN CALIFORNIA

NO MORE SECRET SURVEILLANCE IN CALIFORNIA

Support SB 1186: Communities deserve the power to say no to an intrusive law enforcement presence and the secretive surveillance that puts a target on the backs of immigrants and people of color.

Every day, local law enforcement secretly acquires and uses battlefield surveillance technologies that put people of color, immigrants and activists at increased risk of unnecessary contact with law enforcement, or the federal government that is targeting them.

Although it starts with local law enforcement agencies purchasing high powered technologies like drones, license plate readers, or facial recognition software, or conducting social media surveillance, local surveillance rarely stays local.

Increasingly, this secret surveillance creeps into almost aspect of our lives, leaving the door open to monitoring and detention not just by local police, but also by the federal government. Whether it is the monitoring of #BlackLivesMatter protestors and leaders, or the tracking of immigrant and Muslim community members, this secret surveillance must stop. We must reclaim our power to decide if local law enforcement can acquire and use surveillance technologies, and how those technologies may be used.

Building off successful local movements in Oakland, Davis, and Santa Clara County, Californians have a chance to reclaim our power to protect our communities.

SB 1186 (Hill) will restore this power by ensuring there is transparency, oversight, and accountability over when law enforcement can acquire surveillance technology and how that technology is used. Email your state senator and ask them to protect our communities from secret surveillance by supporting SB 1186.
