Pass the Housing Cost of Attendance Act

CSSA's sponsored legislation AB 710 - the Housing Cost of Attendance Act, by Asm. Cervantes is in Senate Appropriations Committee and we need your help to tell legislators how important this bill is to you. AB 710 proposes a bold new way for California universities to calculate the total cost of attendance by utilizing Housing and Urban Development (HUD) data as opposed to outdated survey information, or outdated survey methodology to calculate these figures.

Without accurate housing costs as a part of the total cost of attendance of a campus, students are harmed. If the costs are set too low, students are literally barred from the aid they may need to survive because students by law cannot receive aid over the campus’s cost of attendance number. If a cost of attendance is set too high, students are encouraged to take out loans they may not need, and graduate with higher than needed debt. Students need the accurate cost of attendance figures that AB 710 would create.
