Many Americans are at risk of losing their economic security if they take time off from work. Workers who are sick or caring for sick family members must be able to take time off without fear of losing their employment. In the case of Covid-19, the pressure to go to work while sick could mean risking one’s life, as well as the lives of one’s coworkers. The FAMILY Act would develop a national family and medical leave insurance fund through a new Office of Paid Family and Medical Leave. Workers would pay into a system to be eligible to receive a portion of their wages in order to take time off to manage a serious health condition, including pregnancy, or to act as a caregiver for someone close, such as a spouse or a child, struggling with a serious health condition.
