The Trump Administration’s Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) has issued a proposed new rule that seeks to inhumanely block LGBTQ people, people of color, women, children, and survivors of violence and torture from seeking asylum in the United States.
DHS new rule radically changes the entire asylum process, making asylum protection in the United States unavailable to most, if not all LGBTQ and HIV‐positive asylum seekers by banning asylum on the basis of gender outright, a key category of relief for LGBTQ asylees.
The rule will impact all new asylum seekers and likely over 800,000 individuals with pending applications. This could prove fatal to LGBTQ people around the world fleeing violence and persecution because of their gender identity and sexual orientation.
