This year, Saudi Arabia has been chosen to host the G20 summit, the annual gathering of the world’s wealthiest nations. Part of the G20 programming for the past two years has included the Urban 20 (U20) subgroup. The U20 brings together the mayors of 26 of the biggest and most powerful cities in the world. This year, as in past years, it includes New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles and Houston.
We are calling on Mayor Turner of Houston to stand against the leadership of Saudi Arabia, which has been starving and bombing the people of Yemen for years. The monarchy’s many human rights abuses — towards women, LGBTQ+ people, and journalists — need to be acknowledged by all participants of the G20 summit. If Mayor Turner were to refuse to attend the summit, it would speak volumes about Houston’s values and may inspire more leaders to do the same.
