Don't Whitewash Saudi Misogyny, Boycott the W20

In just a few days, Saudi Arabia is set to host the W20 summit. The W20, or Women 20, is a section of the G20 summit focused on women around the world. Saudi Arabia’s leadership is guilty of mass human rights violations in their own country as well as Yemen. Whether it be the jailing of women’s rights activists or leading airstrikes on Yemeni civilians, the Saudi monarchy is not fit to host this event.

The U20, or Urban20, took place a couple of weeks ago. This event invited mayors from all over the world to come together and talk about the future of our city spaces. CODEPINK and peace groups from all over called on mayors to boycott the summit. Since so many people were willing to take action, the mayors of New York City, Los Angeles, Paris, and London all dropped out of the summit citing human rights concerns.

We are reaching out to two W20 delegates just in time for the summit. Melissa Fisher is a US-based scholar and cultural anthropologist. Barbara Cleary is a trustee of the National Alliance of Women’s Organizations (NAWO) and is based in the UK. We believe that if we flood their inboxes with messages calling on them to boycott the summit, they will!
