Stop sexual dance choreography and costumes for little girls
BACKGROUND:
People love the art of dance. The ability to move and communicate at the heart level is stirring. Dance is effective communication that transforms.Dance is powerful.
Over the course of the last decade, dance for young children, particularly little girls, has changed. Alarmingly, young girls are becoming increasingly sexualized through dance. If you have recently attended a dance recital or viewed any one of many reality shows on television, you have no doubt viewed choreography that exploits and sexualizes children, using sexy moves, adult costumes, and mature, sexually charged songs to make little girls look and act like mature women.
An American Psychological Association (APA) report concludes that research links the sexualization of children with three of the most common mental health problems:
- eating disorders
- low self-esteem
- depression or depressed mood
At an early age, young children are often being taught how to approach relationships and intimacy in the wrong way. The art of dance should not be used to divert young girls from healthy sexual development. We need to carefully evaluate the cultural choices that entice young children to be viewed as adults. We need to produce healthy boundaries in dance so that little girls are protected relationally. Then, when they experience the beauty of dance, they can move as young children, not as adults.
TAKE ACTION:
Our goal is to start a conversation and shine a spotlight on the dangers and long-term consequences children face when sexualized at such young ages. While this petition focuses on dance, the issue itself is much large. Join us as we raise awareness and educate others about the negative consequences of dance studios that sexualize children in adult costumes and choreography:
1. Nationally through the online petition engaging in a grassroots approach to strengthen and support national organizations. SIGN BELOW
2. Locally through the dance toolkit and decal promoting healthy standards in dance studio costumes and choreography. > To view the toolkit, visit: www.soultosolechoreography.org/toolkit/
THE PETITION:
To: U.S. Dance Studios
Please put an immediate end to the development of dance and the use of costumes that objectify and sexualize children under the age of 12.
At its root, dance can be an effective form of communication that allows children to express themselves. People love dance. The ability to move and communicate at the heart level is stirring. Dance is effective communication that transforms. Dance is powerful. Encourage dance that is age appropriate and stop the sexualization of young children.
