End Hunger for Mothers and Children

“If you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.” – Isaiah 58:10 NIV

The first 1,000 days. This is the time of a child’s life that is critical to their healthy development. It starts in their mother’s womb and lasts until the child turns 2. If a child gets the nutrition they need during this time – and that includes nutrition for their mother during pregnancy and breastfeeding – their immune system is strengthened and their ability to grow and learn is improved. In short, their odds of survival drastically increase.

But every year, malnutrition accounts for half of all deaths of children ages 5 and younger. Nearly a quarter of the world’s children are stunted due to malnutrition, leading to long-term poor health and impaired brain development. Progress is made every year, but there is clearly still work to be done.

House Resolution 189 recognizes the importance of U.S. leadership in improving maternal and child nutrition; supports accelerating progress on nutrition for mothers and children with an emphasis on the first 1,000 days of a child’s life; and calls on USAID to accelerate progress to end maternal and child malnutrition.

The United States has always shown bipartisan leadership on this issue. Please write to your representative today and ask them to cosponsor H.Res. 189 so that all of God’s children can get the nutrition they need to thrive.
