Ask Illinois Policymakers to Help Small Businesses by Changing Unemployment Rules
The small business community continues to struggle with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many small business owners are understandably concerned with making payroll and the viability of their business. Many small businesses will be forced to lay-off or furlough valued employees. Business owners are thankful these employees can seek unemployment benefits. However, there are policy changes supported by the small business community that can help small businesses weather this storm.
The Small Business Advocacy Council is calling on Governor Pritzker, Lieutenant Governor Stratton and legislators to immediately do the following:
- Freeze employers’ unemployment insurance contribution rates as of March 1, 2020. This will ensure these rates are not increased because businesses cannot afford to keep all their employees on payroll.
- Defer the payment of unemployment taxes for a business that certifies it has been impacted by the coronavirus outbreak for 90 days and establish a payment plan for businesses to make those deferred payments.
- Allow a parent, who out of necessity remains at home with a child whose school has closed because of the coronavirus, to qualify for unemployment insurance as long as the parent seeks work that could be performed from home.
