LNG is BC's Opportunity
The pandemic has created a lot of hardship for so many Canadians. We are in this together, and as we begin to turn our attention to our economic recovery it is important we build an inclusive recovery, which can reduce global emissions, while creating jobs and opportunities for British Columbians across the province. One of the best ways Canada can ‘build back better’ is through B.C.’s continued support of liquefied natural gas development (LNG).
Canada’s LNG projects will produce LNG with the lowest emissions anywhere in the world: 35 per cent lower than the best-performing LNG projects. In China, it is estimated they are building an additional coal-fired power plant every two weeks to meet their growing needs. The LNG we are developing in Canada burns 40 per cent cleaner than coal. Exporting clean, British Columbian LNG is how our country can best contribute to lowering global emissions.
Prior to the pandemic, the global demand for natural gas and oil grew continuously for 20 years. As global economies re-open over the coming years, oil and natural gas demand is expected to rebound, and long-term demand will be sustained due to population growth and rising standards of living. British Columbia LNG can provide the world with the clean energy it needs to grow and prosper.
The $40 billion LNG Canada project is the largest private infrastructure investment in Canada’s history. The project under construction in Kitimat and across B.C.’s north has put thousands of people to work. Other proposed LNG projects are looking to add value to Canada’s natural gas as well. Recent research indicated that a thriving LNG industry could generate over $500 billion in new investment, generating over 100,000 jobs in Canada – jobs our province will desperately need in the coming months and years ahead.
As your government begins its second term I implore you to focus on, and support the economic environmental and reconciliation opportunities of expanding B.C.’s LNG development.
