Mayor Walsh : Don't Destroy our Art, our History, or our Heritage
Just before Columbus Day 2020, Mayor Ben Walsh made a pronouncement that he plans to deconstruct the Columbus Monument - an important and historic piece of public art that was privately paid for and then renovated, with contributions from the citizens of Syracuse and New York State.
The Columbus Monument has been celebrated for 86 years. It's beauty, history, and heritage are tightly woven into the fabric of our community.
We encourage the idea of celebrating the diverse polulations who now call Syracuse their home through new public art. Destroying this treasured tribute to Italian American immigrants does nothing to further that cause, and only creates a division our community that isn't there now.
We need to convince Mayor Walsh to reverse this ill advised, politically motivated decision.
