An Ohio Senate amendment added to House Bill 421, a bill that provides civil immunity to hospital police officers and local governments, would correct the 12th District Court of Appeals' horrendous decision that threatens school safety programs all over Ohio.
The court’s erroneous ruling would require more than 700 hours of full police officer training for anyone to be armed in a school as part of a school safety program. In reality, the court’s ruling would end most school safety programs where teachers and staff are permitted to be armed to protect school children.
The amendment would maintain current law and would allow school districts to continue to decide eligibility requirements for school safety programs. The language in the amendment is identical to Senate Bill 317, which has previously passed the Senate.
HB 421 was passed by the Senate and it has been sent back to the House, which must agree on the Senate changes.
Contct your state representative immediately and ask them to vote to protect school safety programs. Without their vote, the issue will be decided by the courts, which have already ruled against armed school staff to protect students.
