Safe Bicycle Facilities on Outer Drive
Dear Local Bicyclist,
As you may know, there has been a growing effort in Dearborn to make it easier for people to walk and bike in our neighborhoods, around our city, and even to neighboring communities. Bike Dearborn and Healthy Dearborn have long been advocates of finding ways to incorporate exercise into our daily living habits, whether for fun or for purpose. Importantly, these efforts also help those of us with disabilities or who do not have easy access to an automobile. Indeed, the recently adopted multi-modal transportation plan (MMTP) is Dearborn’s first vision of a more walkable and bikeable community.
You may also know that, with the generous support of the Kosch family, planning has been underway since the spring of 2017 to make it safer and easier for people to travel by bike on Outer Drive. Designs for this 6 mile stretch, from Ford Road to M39, were vetted by the robust community engagement process conducted for the MMTP. Unfortunately, it has come to our attention that these safer plans have not been considered by the Wayne County Road Commission, who has jurisdiction over Outer Drive in Dearborn.
We are therefore urging the Wayne County Road Commission to ensure that upcoming bicycle infrastructure improvements are at least as safe as recommendations made in the MMTP. Previous pending plans are unsafe and unlikely to encourage those of us who might be interested in bicycling to use them.
Please join us in asking the Wayne County Road Commission to construct safe bicycle facilities on Outer Drive commensurate with the upgraded plans presented in the MMTP.

We hope you will take a few minutes to make the Wayne County Road Commission aware of your concern. If you have any questions, please contact Bike Dearborn.
Thank you in advance for your support!
