Vote "NO" on the 95% drug tax!

The Issue

Leaders in Washington are working tirelessly to find solutions to the rising costs of prescription medicines; however, the current drug pricing plan making its way through Congress includes a hidden 95 percent tax increase that will put America’s most vulnerable patients at risk of losing access to lifesaving and necessary prescription drugs.

While the goal of this proposal is well intended, its harmful consequences will ultimately fall on the shoulders of elderly and Black Americans who are already cut off from quality care, despite experiencing higher levels of chronic diseases. The plan seeks to impose government price controls on 250 of the most common – and needed – prescription drugs, like insulin. But, if these price controls are not enacted, those same drugs will instead receive a 95 percent tax.

Black adults are nearly twice as likely as white adults to develop Type 2 Diabetes. Therefore, if this 95 percent drug tax is implemented, many Black Americans will face either soaring prices at the pharmacy counter or serious, even fatal, medical complications.

The Solution

This 95 percent drug tax not only destroys the innovation needed to develop essential vaccines, but it also introduces another roadblock to Black Americans’ access to lifesaving medicines. We must stop the 95 percent drug tax. Lives depend on it.
