Support Children and Families Through the Extended Child Tax Credit

The expanded Child Tax Credit (CTC) through the American Rescue Plan has provided historic relief to the most working families ever—from July through December, most families automatically received monthly payments of $250 or $300 per child. However, the expanded CTC expired at the end of December 2021 and Congress is debating whether the CTC expansion should continue, and in what form, in 2022 and beyond.

The expanded CTC has helped ease the burden of rising costs for families. Policies that empower families to meet their basic needs and strengthen household financial security, including such options as the CTC, are linked to reducing the risk factors for child abuse and neglect. January 2022 marked the first month families didn't receive the monthly payment, which is needed now more than ever to help support families. Families used the 2021 CTC to cover routine expenses and eligible families experienced improved nutrition, decreased reliance on credit cards and other high-risk financial services, and also made long term educational investments in both parents and children (see here).

More than 61 million children and an estimated 36 million families benefited from the CTC expansion. Losing these monthly CTC payments will add to the hardships that many families are experiencing right now. Read the letter signed by 400+ organizations asking Congress to include the CTC in Build Back Better.

Members of Congress need to hear from YOU to make expanded CTC provisions a priority in end of year legislation. Please use the embedded form below to easily contact your member of Congress and encourage them to make the Child Tax Credit expansion permanent.
