Support SB1387 by Senator Limón today!

Dear Amiga,

To ensure California leadership reflects its greater population, the collection of gubernatorial appointee’s demographic data is a critical step to achieving gender, racial and ethnic parity in California’s boards and commissions.

HOPE is proud to sponsor SB 1387 authored by Senator Limón. HOPE is running this bill because we believe that our democracy is better served when everyone has a seat at the table.

This annual report will serve as a tool to shed light on where inequities in representation exist, encourage outreach to communities of interest, and address any system barriers. Additionally, this bill forms a workgroup of community leaders and subject area experts to inform community outreach and engagement in the appointment process. We believe that California's democracy is strengthened when it reflects a #ACaliforniaLIkeMe.

More about the bill:

This important legislation would require the Office of the Governor to report and publish on an annual basis, a report containing the aggregated demographic data of all appointees made the previous year. In addition to the annual report, the bill creates a workgroup to develop recommendations on outreach and the diversity of boards and commissions to ensure these leaders truly reflect the communities being served. SB 1387 creates the legal framework to collect and publicly share the aggregate data of the appointees’ demographic information, such as race, gender, ethnicity, region, disability status, sexual orientation, and Veteran status, as disclosed by the appointee. This report will serve as a tool to analyze the current landscape and identify which voices are underrepresented at these decision-making tables. In addition to the annual public report, SB1387 also creates a working group that will be tasked with analyzing barriers and developing recommendations on the most effective way to ensure the state’s leadership is truly diverse.
