Let your elected officials know what you think of the tax on retirement income!

When the state government faced a budget deficit in 2011, Public Act 38 reduced a promised, long-standing income tax exemption for pension income based on pensioners’ birthdates. State officials estimated that taxing pensions would bring in hundreds of millions of dollars. This proved accurate. Now, with state revenues for this year and last exceeding past estimates by billions, the time has come to repeal this tax on retirement income.

On both sides of the aisle, a number of bills have been introduced, to reduce, reform, or repeal the tax. Governor Whitmer also proposed phasing out taxation of pension benefits over four years in her initial FY 2022-2023 budget proposal this past February. Her plan calls for a phased approach over the course of four years and would result in a full repeal of the pension tax. At this time, the governor has not introduced a formal bill. MARSP supports all efforts to alleviate the taxation of seniors’ retirement income and continues meeting with legislators to help guide them toward repeal. We encourage you to stand with MARSP Members and encourage your legislators to support REPEAL using the form on this page.

INSTRUCTIONS: First, enter your address into the form. This ensures that your message goes directly to YOUR legislators. From there, you’ll be taken to a pre-written message asking your legislator to repeal the taxation on retirement income. You may send the template message created by MARSP or enter your own message encouraging repeal. Finally, click “submit.”
