Tell Newsom to Support Aviation Greenhouse Gas Reductions

Assembly Bill 1322 (R. Rivas), would establish a framework for the aviation industry to reduce its carbon footprint by creating a plan to incentivize the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

Aviation is an especially difficult sector to decarbonize. In 2015, intrastate aviation accounted for an estimated 36,000,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, or roughly 8.5% of our state’s total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

SAF is the most effective and cost-efficient way to reduce GHG emissions because it is a drop-in renewable fuel, meaning it is compatible with existing fleets and can be mixed with traditional jet fuel. AB 1322 will help to significantly expand the SAF industry, which will contribute to the green economy, create local jobs, and solidify California’s status as a world leader in SAF production and climate protection.

AB 1322 offers incentives that are comparable to policy incentives provided to renewable diesel and other onroad fuels, like tax credits and rebates. Expanding California’s leadership through the goals and incentives in AB 1322 will significantly improve air quality in our communities, create local jobs, stimulate the state economy, and make progress toward achieving the state’s environmental goals.
