Ask your NC representatives to support the Native Plants Act!

North Carolina boasts a rich diversity of native plants and wildlife species, from the mountains to the coast. It is impossible to divorce these species from the state’s natural identity, culture, and history, even in our most urbanized spaces.

Native plants provide food and habitat to native wildlife that have learned to coexist with them over millions of years. Over millenia, this symbiotic relationship has formed between North Carolina’s flora and fauna, producing a vibrant ecological community that functions like a well oiled machine with many intricate and relational parts.

But the introduction of invasive, nonnative plant species has thrown a wrench into the machine, causing much harm to natural landscapes across the state, making it difficult for native plants and wildlife to adapt and thrive for competitive resources.

Not only do these nonnative species pose a significant and increasing threat to wildlife and habitat, but combatting them is a costly and burdensome responsibility for the Department of Transportation, utility companies, farmers, and foresters.

But fortunately, help may be on the way!

The NC Native Plants Act will address this issue, requiring the use of native North Carolina plants and seeds on state property and highways and on local projects that use state funds for landscaping.

By reintroducing native plant diversity to a multitude of landscapes across the state, we can restore the plant life in the state back towards the desired equilibrium, for the good of wildlife and habitat.

But the bill needs your help in order to pass into law! Vocalize your support for the Native Plants Act and help ensure that this crucial bill passes seamlessly for our native plants and wildlife.
