Stop Reckless Gambling
North Carolina legislators are considering a proposal to allow video lottery terminals to be placed in gas stations, convenience stores, bars, and taverns throughout the state. If passed, the estimated number of video slot machines brought into North Carolina would be equivalent to 20 new casinos.
The Las Vegas-style slot machines would be owned by predatory out-of-state operators, and expose our children and families to gambling in our neighborhoods. Allowing tens of thousands of Las Vegas-style slot machines in the state would only benefit these predatory out-of-state operators, their highly paid Raleigh lobbyists, and NOT North Carolina businesses, families, and job creators.
Illinois put more than forty thousand Las Vegas-style slot machines in gas stations, convenience stores, bars, and taverns all over the state and it has been a disaster. We do not want North Carolina to be the next Illinois.
This type of gambling expansion would bring mini-casinos to every Main Street in North Carolina. There would be Las Vegas-style slot machines next to our schools, next to our churches, and next to our grocery stores, and would be the equivalent of adding at least twenty additional casinos in the state.
