Please Support Representatives Yakym and Titus' Amendment

As a constituent and proud supporter of the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA), the oldest and largest organization of model aircraft hobbyists in the country, I urge you to support an amendment advocated by Representatives Yakym (R-IN) and Titus (D-NV) to the House FAA Reauthorization Bill. This amendment makes critical improvements to the bill by providing additional flexibility for model aircraft hobbyists to operate in uncontrolled airspace and allow them to secure faster approval for the establishment of recognized fixed flying sites for recreational UAS operations from the FAA. This amendment is critical to the future of not only our hobby, but AMA's ability to educate, inspire, and fund the next generation of pilots, engineers, astronauts, and aviation professionals.

The proposed language would (1) allow for recreational UAS operations in Class G airspace above 400-feet AGL and allows the FAA to authorize recreational UAS flights into controlled airspace; (2) require that community-based organizations become designated Federal Aviation Administration Trust Administrators; and (3) allow for FAA-approved community-based organizations to self-declare FRIAs (FAA-Recognized Identification Areas) to sponsored sites that meet criteria developed by the Administrator in coordination with community-based organizations. I hope you can support this common-sense amendment that would allow those operating within AMA’s programming throughout the country to continue to thrive, support education and safety initiatives, and encourage the next generation of aviators.

If you have questions about AMA or this language, please contact Tyler Dobbs (tylerd@modelaircraft.org) or Chrystal Pearson (chrystalp@modelaircraft.org) at AMA (765-287-1256) to discuss.
