Arizona's Physicians & Patients Threatened by Outdated & Near-total Ban on Pregnancy Termination

The Arizona Medical Association and the larger healthcare community are highly concerned about the implications of the Arizona Supreme Court’s decision to uphold a near-total ban on pregnancy termination crafted over a century ago. This ban is dangerous and antiquated; its enforcement will threaten physicians and our patients, so we are asking for your help.

A bipartisan group of representatives introduced ArMA-supported House Bill 2677 to repeal the pre-statehood ban, which passed on April 24, 2024. Now, the Senate is considering Senate Bill 1734, which mirrors HB2677's intent. Once passed in the Senate, legislation to repeal Arizona's 1864 ban will sent to Governor Katie Hobbs.

We are calling on Republicans and Democrats to unite and repeal the ban. Legislators must hear that the House of Medicine condemns governmental interference in the physician-patient relationship and rejects laws criminalizing physicians for evidence-based procedures.

This effort is about protecting the principles of medicine. Regardless of where you stand on pregnancy termination, please help us repeal the ban by sending a pre-drafted email to Senators requesting their support of SB1734/HB2677.
