Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles (CHLA) has recklessly complied with Donald Trump’s lawless executive order seeking to ban gender-affirming care for youth under the age of 19. CHLA has stopped initiating hormonal therapy to new patients - sending a confusing and demoralizing message to the TGNBI+ everywhere. CHLA’s actions not only contradict California law and the guidance issued by Attorney General Rob Bonta’s office, but they legitimize the Trump administration’s authority to legislate access to care.
This decision not only directly harms transgender youth by preventing them from receiving treatment to life-saving care, but also families and the providers and staff at CHLA whose expertise are necessary for transgender children’s health and well-being. CHLA’s halt of treatment more importantly reinforces the attacks our community and young people have faced under the Trump administration and sets a dangerous precedent for other medical providers to do the same.
