Please sign Stand Your Ground into law!
A little over a decade ago, Ohio enacted legislation embodying the "castle doctrine." This established that Buckeyes could defend themselves and their families using deadly force without any duty to retreat -- but only in the home or in a vehicle.
Although anti-gun zealots predicted that Ohio would become "the Wild West," the "castle doctrine" has worked well. As a result, thousands of Ohioans are alive today -- rather than being victims of violent crime.
So there is no reason why residents of this state should not be able to protect themselves and their families in public -- in the same way as they can currently protect them in the home or in their car.
A little over a year ago, a shooter in Dayton began opening fire in a neighborhood of bars and nightlife. Ultimately, he killed 9 people and wounded 17. But it's important to note that gun control made the shooter's actions a lot easier.
It's no surprise that he picked a gun-free zone, as Ohioans are not allowed to carry concealed while drinking. Obviously, had there been someone with a gun, walking on the street, that person could have engaged the shooter and saved many lives (as has happened in other states).
But Ohio's gun laws threaten any Good Samaritan because he or she must consider whether they have a duty to retreat before drawing their gun. This means that a shooter would be able to inflict carnage, at least for a while, without fear that any civilian would fire back.
Governor, please think twice before holding these people's lives hostage to "red flag" gun confiscation. This bill would allow police to raid my home in the middle of the night to confiscate my guns and, if I resisted, to kill me -- based on a fraudulent affidavit.
Obviously, this is unacceptable. So please sign S.B. 383 without placing any conditions on its enactment.
