Say No to Nuclear War
First, I want to thank you, President Biden, for your support in extending the START nuclear arms treaty with Russia for five years and for rejecting Victoria Nuland's advice to limit the extension to one year.
Please work toward US and global denuclearization by signing on to the new treaty prohibiting the use of nuclear weapons. The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), negotiated by more than 130 states, is a good faith effort to meet their responsibility as signatories of the nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. To support the new treaty, please exercise the power of US leadership and invite the other nuclear weapons states to join with us and begin negotiations in a time-bound framework with verified inspections for the total abolition of nuclear weapons.
Additionally, we must take our nuclear weapons off hair-trigger alert, as our missiles are now loaded with lethal warheads, posed to be fired in minutes at cities targeted around the world, with little time to respond to computer malfunctions or other human errors. In contrast, China keeps all its warheads separated from their delivery missiles. According to the Federation of American Scientists, there are about 13,000 nuclear bombs on the planet with some 12,000 in the US and Russia while the other 7 nuclear-armed countries have about 1100 warheads in all.
As for modernization, we already have enough nuclear warheads to destroy the world ten times over and do not need more weapons of mass destruction. Instead, we need to invest in urgent human needs for health care, housing, food, and environmental sustainability. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Denuclearize our country
